It's really nice to see people who want to bring light to LGBT issues & show people who might be experiencing hardships that it's OK to be the way they are. It's also amazing to see businesses take LGBT causes into consideration by donating to charities & organisations & showing support for our community. However, there's a huge difference between genuine support for a minority community & taking advantage of a minority community for personal gain. I find it absolutely disgusting how these exploitative practises are considered forms of allyship. What makes these even worse is how they pander & virtue signal to the extremist crowd because they don't represent us at all. In fact, they hate us.
The LGBT community came together due to the oppression of gay, bisexual & trans people. The pathways to discovering yourself & coming out can be really difficult, especially when you live in a place where LGBT people are treated horribly.
We're not your currency.
We're not your shield.
We're not your oppression points.
We’re a community with rights.
We’re a community who had to fight to be recognised as equals.
If you're someone who wants to talk about LGBT issues, do in-depth research on LGBT topics. Don't be disingenuous and spread false information. If you're a business, don't force politics into the products you're selling. Doing that will only cause drops in sales.
